Debut release Places was recorded mostly in Istanbul with some pieces in Berlin. Over the course of its ten songs, Places slowly reveals an introspective melancholy through sparse lo-fi dirges, dark drones and accomplished layered compositions.

Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist Gustav Kemps, under the alias Perlah, debuts with Places—a lo-fi cartography of solitude released via Trome Records. Recorded between Istanbul and Berlin, the album unfolds like a study in negative space: fragile folk minimalism dissolving into drone, where melody becomes residue and silence takes structural form.
Each track drifts in slow, granular motion, invoking the spectral melancholy of Hood or Bark Psychosis while resisting nostalgia’s pull.

Perlah is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Gustav Kemps, blending elements of lo-fi folk, slowcore, and drone into a deeply reflective sound world. Recorded mainly in Istanbul, with additional sessions in Berlin, Places unfolds across ten tracks that balance sparse, dirge-like pieces with layered, textural compositions. The result is a record steeped in quiet intensity—its slow, deliberate pace revealing a sense of solitude and subdued beauty.

Una città crocevia culturale (Berlino o Istanbul che sia), interno di un giorno che non risplenderà; ombre, solitudine e una malinconia dolce, quasi da assaporare. Se “Places” fosse un cortometraggio racconterebbe di quei luoghi e di quelle sensazioni, attraverso immagini sfocate, nebbiose, dai contorni a malapena distinguibili.
Invece è un disco, il primo del polistrumentista Gustav Kemps, che ha preso forma proprio a cavallo di quelle due città, i cui ricordi sono appunto distillati attraverso suoni non meno impalpabili, lenti e malinconici. Il comune denominatore delle sue dieci tracce è tutto in un intimismo compassato, dimesso nelle sue cadenze sfumate, nei suoni acustici che scolorano in risonanze di granulosa bassa fedeltà, a incorniciare come un’istantanea sbiadita il cantato sommesso di Kemps.
Eppure, benché l’essenza del breve lavoro sia appunto in prevalenza soffice e sonnolenta, solcata appena da minute interferenze atmosferiche, non mancano un paio di episodi appena più strutturati e “concreti”, canzoni vere e proprie come la title track, ingentilita dalla voce di Lily Beltane, e “Stay”, il cui battito marziale sfocia in uno spasmo elettrico circolare. Si tratta dell’unico autentico sfogo di una tensione altrimenti latente, di un pathos soffocato interiormente, nel solitario rifugio in penombra di un artista dalla sensibilità tormentata, mentre la metropoli, intorno, continua a muoversi incurante, tra le ombre di un inverno che appare senza fine.

Music Won't Save You
Instantaneous dose of all that I love about the 90's / early 00's bedroom post-rock scene. Flirting with so many of my favorites, of course Hood, Movietone and Empress quickly spring to mind, even a dash of Yo La Tengo and Donna Regina in there. Perlah still adds a quality all their own, something more modern, focused, with somehow deeper levels of grey. Well worth exploring.
